I'm with you on designing your own, but just in case you fancy a
dabble with some ready made s/w, a letter response in a recent Linux
Format recommends some:

www.mamboserver.com (the most popular, most versatile, and most
configurable, but has a steep learning curve)
2 obvious ones:
PHP-Nuke
Postnuke
www.twiki.org
Favourite one: www.exponentcms.org, the most configurable,
straightforward and docile. Nowhere near as scary as the others.
One last place to check if you like: www.opensourcecms.com
