OK, here goes, I hope the sending of an attachment to the list doesn't
upset anyone too much.

I discovered the issue with scanning from The Gimp is that, in
advanced settings, there are scanning co-ordinates from:to. These were
set so there was nothing to scan. No idea how they got that way.
