Well, that gave me a laugh:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 487M 412M 51M 90% /
/dev/sda1 99M 34M 60M 37% /boot
/dev/shm 1010M 0 1010M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda3 8.1G 4.3G 3.4G 57% /home
/dev/sda8 487M 11M 451M 3% /tmp
/dev/sda5 4.8G 1.9G 2.6G 43% /usr
/dev/sda7 965M 136M 780M 15% /var
/dev/sda9 7.8G 7.4G 41M 100% /home/John/work
/dev/sda10 7.8G 7.4G 55M 100% /home/John/audio
/dev/sda11 7.8G 778M 6.7G 11% /home/John/oldWork

Part of the rationale behind the 7.8G thing is it's supposed to be a
good thing if your partitions fit on a backup medium, in this case, a
DVD.

I clearly need to shift some 'work' to oldWork, and dump some audio
stuff, but the 90% usages of root worries me.

Anyone got a mental link from this to my download problems?

J
