Hi

There were four members at Monday's Slug meeting. Not too bad for August. We
talked about David's live CD for the partially sighted, other topics inluded
the price of flash memory - I got a 512Mb flash stick in Tesco's for £5.99 on
Monday, only to discover on Tuesday that you can get a Gb in Smith's for
£8.74.

We all agreed that some new blood would be a good idea, so at the next meeting
of Slug, due on Monday 3rd September at the Valley, some time will be devoted
to discussing future organisation and plans. Here are some of the topics we
thought would be worth talking about.

THE FUTURE OF SLUG MEETINGS - Points for discussion.

(Input on the mailing list is welcome from everyone and is not a commitment to
come to meetings)

We should fix the day of the week when meetings take place. This makes it
easier for people to organise their lives so that they can come. The first
Monday of each month was suggested.

The meetings could be at the Blind Club in Dean Road, where there is internet
access and more equipment.

The meetings could have a more varied format. Three half
hour sessions on: a beginners topic -examples "KOffice vs OpenOffice"
and "command line vs GUI": a more advanced topic - example ADRIAN, a system
for the blind built by the same guy who invented Knoppix: and a session on
any other business in which anyone could talk on anything.

We could do a poster for the library to emphasise the non-commercial side of
Linux, giving contact addresses, with a screenshot of, say, KDE4.

We could change the name. SLUG is not sexy. I came up with SOLOS, which is
an acronym for Scarborough Organisation for Linux and Open Software. Someone
can probably do better.

Bob
