I think that at the moment there isn't really a group, so it can't have
a mission.

On occasion I have mused over what it is that I personally want from a
LUG - and I conclude that for me it's a social thing with like minded
people.

When I first went to SLUG it was only because John and Dave Webster were
going and I was just starting to use Linux.

I wouldn't say I learnt loads specifically about Linux from the meetings
- - I suspect I joined at the back end of a good time as a lot of
knowledgeable people drifted off shortly after. I have however made
friends which is a Good Thing and actually learnt more about offshoot
things like, more recently, Openstreetmap.

I use IRC, forums, and the Interweb search for help with problems
relating to Linux, and frankly most things work out of the box anyway. I
don't have time to evangelise, and I think I have given up trying to
'fight the power'. I'm hoping my g/f's laptop survives past the XP
support cutoff so that I can suggest she installs Ubuntu, but that's as
far as it goes.

So yeah, it's a social hobby thing for me, and if I learn something at
the same time that is interesting/geeky then great, and if someone
learns something from me then that's unusual but better still.
