Thanks for all the ideas about the Bourne shell. I was confused because I thought I was writing for the Bourne shell but with Red Hat /bin/sh is a link to bash. So I simplified the script to use only Bourne shell constructs and then it turned out that the vets have the Korn shell as well so that made everything easy. Tony Sumner
