Hi all

I am about ready to convert my small home lan to wireless. Casting around a 
bit on the net, it seems I can simply purchase a wireless nic for each 
machine and run my network in 'ad-hoc' mode (e.g. 
http://www.homenethelp.com/web/diagram/ad-hoc.asp sorry if the site is a  
bite lame). I will have two laptops on the network and a desktop pc which 
will need a usb wireless nic as I plan to use get a minitx motherboard at 
some stage and do away with the desktop pc. I also need to be able to add 
another laptop into the network on an adhoc basis. The main point of this 
post is:

Can this can be done without a base station thingy?
Can anyone tell me whether I can expect my 4 pc network to work ok without a 
base station?
Can anyone recommend the cheapest most plug 'n play pcmcia & usb devices to 
purchase?
Any other gotchas I should look out for?
