[sclug] escape character ignored in FC2 telnet

I've encountered a problem with telnet (running in a Gnome Terminal) in
Fedora Core 2. I get the usual "Escape character is '^]'." message but
pressing control and ']' doesn't escape from the session, it's echoed to
the terminal instead.

[heywood at bridge heywood]$ telnet 192.168.1.17 2001
Trying 192.168.1.17...
Connected to 192.168.1.17.
Escape character is '^]'.
Hello.
^]^]^]^]^]^]^]

Any ideas?

S.
