Simon's right, you need an IMAP server - all recent MUAs can read mail 
from an IMAP server, and the advantage is that the mail stays on the 
server rather than being downloaded into whatever format the MUA wants 
to use.

Overview: set up fetchmail/getmail (I'd favour the latter too) and 
configure it to deliver mail to an IMAP server (Dovecot is simply the best).

If the overview gives problems, shout when you get stuck and I (or 
someone) will help.
