Will,

>Do you have any idea what graphics chipset you've actually got there? TNT2M64's seem to be quite popular in no-brand graphics cards, so it could be one of those: if so, shouldn't be a problem.

Fedora had problems with the graphics (an Intel i860) and the
screen went blank when Suse died, so it got the blame.

>Have you tried using text-mode install?

It was on my list of things to do (since it involved reading
the manual it got done last). Tried it this afternoon and I
am now a bona-fide Suse user.

The installation seems to think that anybody who does
not want to install KDE or Gnome must want a minimal
installation. It installed in 30 mins and then required another
1+ hour to install the options I had to select manually (what
a user-unfriendly package installation system yast is).

Now I just have to sort out the usual X issues with optimal
screen configuration. At least fvwm2 was included as part of
the default install.

>Have you considered Kubuntu?

I use Linux for work and so stick with the brand distributions.
I was a happy Redhat user, but Fedora does not seem to be
cutting it, the commercial distribution does not look worth the
money, and Suse seems to be gaining in popularity.
