No: it ties you to one storage format, which in this case is Maildir - 
don't confuse IMAP, a protocol, with the backend storage mechanism. You 
can use any IMAP server that supports Maildir (which is most of them). 
This is exactly what I do (although I'm using Spamassassin), and I have 
a script that runs each night to educate SA. I'll happily post the 
script if you want.
