The problem turned out to be a lot of apt 'backup' stuff in the
/var/.Trashroot folder, which a normal user cannot usually see (it seems). I
tweaked Ubuntu so I could log in as root, then emptied the trash-bin and
that solved the problem.

Thanks for the help.

Why do I have a /var partition? It seemed a good idea at the time. :-)
