We use USB HDDs on all our hosts.

For straightforward backups on Linux use tar in a shell script run as a
cron job. It is sensible to unmount the USB HDD at the end of the script
so that in an emergency you can pull out the wires and run out of the
building clutching your backups to your breast!

We develop platform independent information management software written in
Java. This includes a configurable backup module 'Dumper'. Although our
o/s of choice is Linux (currently kUbuntu) we need to run on various
versions of Windows for testing purposes. If you or your customers need to
run on mixed hosts Dumper may be of interest to you.
