That's rather odd - I've never had EXT3 crap itself
like that after a dirty shutdown, or at least not on
mandrivel 2006 or fedora 6/7. 

However I have had uberborkage on USB devices due to
inadequate cables - running on a 3m cable causes the
most outrageous spamming of SCSI error messages
(before total faliure) in my terminal when copying a
load of files from a USB hard drive. Using a 1.8m
cable fixed this. The 3m cable is only adequate for
low-speed devices (mice, etc).

I don't know whether intermediate hubs contribute to
overall signal degradation.
