Gentoo is really best if you have a network connection as the whole point is
to have the very latest source code available and easily installable (is
that a word?).  Debian can be installed happily from CD's, but again a
network connection is a must if you want to get the best out of it.  If you
want a similar experience (system wise) without the need for a network
connection, well maybe something like Slackware would be a good place to go.
Like Gentoo or Debian you get to get your hands dirty in a decent UNIX like
environment.

Anyone else got any tips?
