The only way to tell if a Lugger is alive is to look at the hands. If they
are moving - usually rapidly entering code - then its alive.  If the lugger
is asleep then look for the telltale row of characters (zzzzzzzzzzzzzz in my
case) and the annoying beeeeeep b b b beeeeeeeeeeep!
