I don't think it matters which boot loader you use, its something to do
with having vga=ask set.

Perhaps the apmd tries to work out what screen resolution you will be
using to suspend the screen and as its set to ask, causes it to fail
miserably.

I'm guessing here, but I can't seem to find anything on the net regarding
crashes with vga=ask anymore.
