from my newbie position here... I agree!
I've got to say that whilst learning, there's a _lot_ of value in separating
out the /usr and possibly /var partitions as when (_not_if_ :p ) you have to
bugger about from boot disks to get things going again, you can easily mount
stuff and trash stuff, whilst still getting at those important, yet still
not fully backed up config files :)

Those in the higher echelons amongst us would I'm sure argue against it, but
it saved me on more than enough occasions :)

If in doubt... separate it out :}
