Using -k tells emerge to install a particular .ebuild package (actually
this will happen by default if you give emerge a full path to that
package anyway). Using inject won't install the package but make
portage think that the package has been installed. I don't advise doing
this generally, but if you have binaries to install, and there is a
valid portage package in existence, then it can be useful to tell
portage that an application is installed that it didn't install itself.
