You don't actually need broadband to install Gentoo.  With the Gentoo
Reference Platform version it all comes pre-compiled for your
whatever-type processor on 2 CDs.  All you need is a friend with broadband
to download it for your architecture and to burn the CDs for you. Also 
DVD version of Linux Format for November has something on it for Gentoo
1.4, but I haven't checked exactly what.  It is more fun with broadband
tho'.

I use Crossover Office with Gentoo fine.  Some of Plugin works but I
couldn't get Flash Movie to work and therefore use the native Linux
version of this.
