man screen(1) 

  Screen  is a full-screen window manager that multiplexes a physical
  terminal between several processes.

Specifically it supports disconnecting and reconnecting.  I use it all
the time for just the purpose you describe.  It is very cool.  Also
allows you todo more than one thing in a single ssh connection in a way
more intuitive than job control.
