[Sussex] synce - not connecting

Yup, tried that, but it only tells me that it's waiting for the device 
to connect. I can't find out how to do that - i.e. I can't see where I'd 
open the "USB" connection? I've been through the synce HOWTO again, and 
even though I've managed to get the trayicon running again, I still 
can't get it to connect?

Damn, I must be missing something here, but what?
