[Sussex] Re: Kernel compilation gone horribly wrong

I've never really understood this myself. I've followed instructions on
other websites for upgrading a generic linux system up from 2.4 to 2.6
and had them fail every time under slackware, whilst I've managed it
successfully (to an extent) under other distros (like Suse, although I
then discovered the Suse kernel is rather specialised and I ended up
having to go back to the Suse kernel to get everything working). The
only way that has ever worked for me was to use the kernel install that
you find under the testing folder on the CD, and following the Docs.
Once that's done, I've had no hassles installing and up to date 2.6
kernel. At some stage I'll probably try and unpackage those install
packages (if I can) just out of curiosity to find out what it actually
does.
