Can I break with the current trend and suggest Mandriva, I've been using it
since version 7.0
right up to Ltd Ed 2005 (which is way better than 10.1 was!).
Nice and easy to use. Great hardware support. Pretty up to date.
At last official count (according to Linux Format) it was also the most
widely used distro in the UK.

That said all distros have come along in leaps and bounds over recent years,
the only one I'd suggest you avoid is Slackware (which is a great distro - I
used the 3.x versions and cut my teeth on them),
but is not so newbie friendly as most.

Knoppix 3.9 (downloaded at the weekend by me) would make a great way for you
to try Linux
and see how well it works on your kit. It's much better than the 3.8.2
release.

Mike
