Hi all

[Longish XP question]

Forgive me for posting an XP question here but this is a last resort before
I do a full XP reinstall on my father-in-law's machine. This is the second
full reinstall required inside a month - quite how he manages to get it into
this sort of state is beyond me. Last time for example, he'd managed to
disable all his services so Device Manager was empty!

Anyway, the problem this time is that he's getting Error 720 or Error 691
when trying to connect via dialup. I've checked his username and password
is ok, and infact I've had it bring up a terminal window so I can manually
type in the username and password - but access is still denied. In a last
ditch effort, I created another dialup connection (different ISP) but the
same problem occurred.

Googling around tells me it's something to do with his network settings but
I've resintalled TCP/IP via the netsh command but still no joy: it dials,
handshakes, gets to the "registering computer on network", then hangs up
with error 720 or 691 (both of which have something to do with network
settings). I've been through the modem and dialup troubleshooter and it
hasn't solved the problem.

Essentially, I think it's a little setting somewhere but I can't find it and
a full reinstall seems the only solution. Last time I did this for him, it
took nearly 3 hours because his CD doesn't contain SP2 so it had to be
downloaded and MS's servers were slow.

Needless to say - he doesn't want to get broadband! - and I've not played
with dialup for 5 years since I went broadband.

Cheers
Rob
