For what its worth I have just done a similar upgrade after changing 
from SuSE 9.3 to 10.1.

In my case the driver from NVidia is the same  for both versions. The 
need to recompile is because the kernel has changed. Yast did not want 
to know and I ccould only recompile  from run level 3 as root on SuSE 
10.1 There is a rudimentary Nvidia installer to guide one through the 
process and edit the Xconf file with Sax.
