Oh, yes. It's extremely robust, very well written, reasonably well 
documented, and easily extensible for non-standard setups. Its primary 
author was Sam Leffler, the creator of TIFF and one of the primary 
authors of BSD itself. He basically wrote something like the GNU 
"configure", specifically for HylaFAX, before autoconf existed.
