I would suggest you look at dmesg |less to see if the kernel logs on boot
have references to SCSI or USB controllers in them. Perhaps the module for
USB (uchi, ochi, echi) hadn't loaded for some reason.

Have you updated your kernel and didn't reboot? If you compiled the kernel
yourself, perhaps you forgot to compile and install the modules.
