[Sussex] ADSL and weather

I had to reflash the firmware of a modem/router as a result of some 
lightning blasting off the chimney stack on a block of flats about 200 
meters away. The router was not otherwise damaged.
A friend of mine lives a distance away (about 8k) from the adsl enabled 
exchange and BT absolutely refuse to let him have broadband. For him a 
slightly flakey broadband at 500kb/s is much more useful than nothing.
