That is one of the suggested mechanisms for recovering a bricked WRT.
Never had to try it myself (yet), but sound advice about boot_wait.

There are plenty of guides on how to set it using various methods. If
you're planning on reflashing a Linksys WRT54G, always set boot_wait
before you do so. It might just save you a *lot* of hassle. It's save
my bacon a couple of times already.
