C++ since 1988 and Linux since 1994 - can I help ?

I found the MFC and the Windows API beyond my comprehension.
There are toolkits like KDE and Gnome for the low level X11 graphics code
on Linux. 
 
Oh and for a bit of variety I run Fedora 15 here - I tried and gave up with 
Debian and Ubuntu.
