Thanks Desmond and Steve for your replies to my plea for help. I will investigate a bit further and report back. I haven't tried "squeezy" yet, but fully intend to do so soon.

I'm running Debian squeezy on a Acer Aspire One and have had no trouble
at all.  I'm surprise you find it broken in Ubuntu.
