Tiscali may or may not work for you. They supply a USB modem. The one they supplied me (Sagem Fast 800) wasn't properly supported under Linux, though I got it working once or twice (that was back in Jan 2005). My folks who went with broadband with Tiscali this Feb, got a newer Speedtouch USB modem as part of the package.
My folks don't use Linux - so I never got to true, but I believe the Speedtouch would be USB compatible.
The easiest (though slightly pricier - since you have to make a one off purchase) method is to buy an ADSL modem router. Thats what I did. This handles it all in hardware and you just connect the PC to the router via Ethernet. This is the simplest and easiest and most compatible way of doing it.

Incidentally, I've now switched to Orange Broadband with their Livebox (which is basically a wireless router but also with a couple of ethernet ports). That works fine with Linux, XP, Vista (I've got all 3).

Hope this helps
