hi Desmond,

thanks for the advice, but I don't follow what you mean, I can only log on as my username - do I have to log on somehow with the 'administrator's' password that I set up when I installed? if so, how do I do this.

I have had a look at the Control panel and tried to configure the wireless facility, but do not have the correct permissions, could you go through this in nice easy stages please!! thanks

incidentally, Freespire picked up my wireless facility automatically, why did Mandriva not do this?
Steve,
You must set up (using Mandriva Control Panel) the Wi-Fi as the firmware must be written in the right place and only root has that privilege. The firmware is on the Mandriva 2008.1 PWP DVD, you don't need to download anything. The Intel ipw 2200 is absolutely no problem. When you have done this you will find the firmware correctly written to /lib/firmware.
Once the card is installed then as normal user you can set up the Wi-Fi access in the normal way.
