Thanks to Telsa for the response :o)

Yup, you're right there. I believe it's kdm doing all the restarting. I've
kicked it down to runlevel 2 and started X manually, which seems to be
behaving. I think I read somewhere that kdm etc. starts the X server twice in
rapid succession, which the nvidia drivers don't particularly like.

Plus I've updated the drivers to a newer version. After managing to fudge the
whole thing up (NVchooser advised me to download the wrong binaries... d'oh)
and preventing X from working at all I eventually managed to figure out what
was going on and install the right kernel driver.

Very impressed indeed, thank you :o)

> Do you absolutely _need_ the binary drivers?

Yeah, unfortunately. I can't blow heads off things with Mesa - or not reliably
at least.

So thanks for the help, it seems stable now and I didn't have to resort to
GNOME or stop using xmms / Konqueror / Unreal Tournament.

As an aside it doesn't drop X when I kill kdeinit anymore. Maybe I was doing
something stupid like using killall to do it last time?

Oh and thanks to Phil for making me aware of Knoppix - one of my superiors in
work was asking about a boot from CD distro so I burned him a copy of that.

Foeh.
