Dear All

A brief summary:
I want to install the latest version of Kooka for OCR purposes. The version with Man 8.2 has a known error which is fixed in the latest version. Another way to fix it is to purchae mandrake 9.1 which has KDE 3.1 and has addressed the problem.

When installing Kooka the command "./configure" was telling me to install Qt version 3.1 or above. This was not on the Mandrake 8.2 distro so I got it from the web as an RPM file, "libqt3-devel-3.1.1-13mdk.i586.rpm".

Using the GUI I tried to install this, I enterd the password for root and got yet another error message about needing things:
Error
libqt3 <>= S 3..1.1-13mdk is needed by libqt3-devel-3.1.1-13mdk.i586
libXft.so.2 <>= S is needed by libqt3-devel-3.1.1-13mdk.i586
libfontconfig.so.1 <>= S is needed by libqt3-devel-3.1.1-13mdk.i586
libstdc++.so.5 <>= S is needed by libqt3-devel-3.1.1-13mdk.i586
libstdc++.so.5(GLIBCPP_3.2) <>= S is needed by libqt3-devel-3.1.1-13mdk.i586

I abandoned the installation and did a check of Software and Package Manager and concluded that apart from the first package which was already installed the remaining four were neither installed nor available via the distribution.

Incensed and foolish I resumed the installation of "libqt3-devel-3.1.1-13mdk.i586.rpm" and chose to force the installation. I tried to configure kooka again with ./configure and got:

"checking for libjpeg... -ljpeg
checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.1 (20021021)) (library qt-mt) not found. Please check your installation!"

Using Package Manager I could not find anything for qt-mt. I did find from the web "qt2-mt-2.3.0-5cl.i386.rpm" so I downloaded it and installed it. With alas an error message:
"libpng.so.2 <>= is needed by qt2-mt-2.3.0-5cl"
So I forced it (Oh dear this was a mistake) and at the end got another message about conflicts:
1) file /usr/lib/qt2/lib/libqt-mt.so.2 conflicts with file from package libqt2-2.3.1-29mdk
2) file /usr/lib/qt2/lib/libqt-mt.so.2.3 conflicts with file from package libqt2-2.3.1-29mdk

Undetered and not knowing what I am doing I tried ./configure again. Luckily I got the same qt-mt error message.

Have I completely mucked it up ?

Is there anything I can do ?

I am sure I should not "force" installations in the future.

Please feel free to tell me off because I am sure I have made some stupid decissions.

Thanks
