Sadly, we are today one big step closer to having software patents in 
Europe. It now looks almost certain that the flawed and vague directive 
proposal text introduced by the Irish presidency in May will now be formally 
adopted by the European Council as its common position:

It's now up to the European Parliament to either throw it out and start 
again (might not be a bad idea), or at least amend it to make sure the text 
is clear about what can and can't be patented (but that would require an 
absolute majority for each and every amendment).
