Many thanks.  The trick appears to be to empty the KDE session, which
appears to have become infected (for want of a better term) as a result of
starting Gnome.  If you're interested, this is what I did:

*  Select "failsafe" from the window manager list (twm didn't open anything)
*  Start kcontrol from the terminal window that opens
*  Select KDE components
*  Select Session Manager
*  Select "Start with an empty session"
*  Log out
*  Log back in to KDE

So I won't be trying Gnome again in a hurry.  Very anti-social behaviour.
