[SWLUG] lines in gtk apps that weren't there before!

Not sure about the lines, but maybe you should trying using 
beep-media-player, a GTK2 fork of xmms, which fully supports GTK2 and 
gives you nice things like AA fonts and a Gnome HIG ish preferences section.
