[SWLUG] advice on kvm switches please

i'm looking at the above and i've found some that have power adapters and some 
that don't, what would that be about? the number of ports?
plus i've read a few references to video degradation using kvm, is that 
common?
if anyone can shed some light i'd be grateful, i'm looking to get a 4 port 
switch to avoid playing with cables behind boxes (and hurting my back!) every 
time i bring a friends machine home to fix
