[SWLUG] Getting my scanner working

Hi all

I could do with some help getting my scanner working using xsane from
GNOME in Ubuntu Linux, which is more or less the same as Debian, for
those who don't know it.

My scanner is an EPSON GT7000 which uses a SCSI interface. Both the
scanner and the card (Adaptec AHA7xxx series) are, as far as I can see,
fully supported, if I do

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

I get

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 02 Lun: 00
Vendor: EPSON Model: SCANNER GT-7000 Rev: 1.14
Type: Processor ANSI SCSI revision: 02

However, when I run xsane it tells me "no devices available". It's not
a straightforward permissions thing as I get the same when I run xsane
as root.

The scanner is probed on startup by the hotplug system.

One thing I have noticed is that I don't have any scsi (eg 'sg') devices
in /dev, but they are in /.dev. If this is the problem, then I need
some advice on how to create them in /dev.

'man sane-dll' and 'man sane-epson', give some advice which I have
followed as best I can. E.g I have /etc/sane.d/epson.conf with

scsi EPSON

in it - all other lines are commented out. dll.conf has 'epson' listed.

'man san-scsi' refers to actions to take to get permissions right if you
are using a device filesystem (devfs) - again I am a bit unsure about
how to proceed with this.

Any help will be very welcome...
