you sure they prove more reliable?  i understand what you're saying
about RPM and what not, but tarballs are no more reliable.  you can
still get in a mess when upgraded things from source. and when
uninstalling things if  you're not careful.

i've not got a problem with ports/apt/rpm/tars/etc.  the one thing i
would say is that MDK used to do some odd things with headers and
stuff, but on the whole they're much of a muchness.
