OTOH, I always suggest heading over to the TLDP (The Linux
Documentation Project) at http://www.tldp.org

TLDP used to house docs on architecture and the whys and wherefors. 
Not sure if it's still the case, but there's enough documentation to
keep you or your printer going for months and it's free.
