You can get a live cd version of Joomla if you want to try it.

never used any of them personally as I always build my own specific CMS's
mainly because my clients never need the functionality of these larger 
setups.

however, a colleague of mine is busy making a learning platform and he
reckons that joomla is blummin marvellous, so good in fact that he is 
using that as
the core of his system.
