Laptops: I quite like Dell laptops (bang for buck they're usually a
good/safe bet.  I have a Latitude D600 (i think the model is D610
now).  There's probably an inspiron equivalent of this for around that
price - Centrino type chipsets.  IIRC, latitude is the corp market and
inspiron is the home.

BTW, be aware that some of the ADSL modems they supply with ADSL can
be more trouble than they're worth with Linux/BSD.  I found it a lot
easier to just buy a ADSL modem/WIFI router and separate that function
of my home LAN.
