Hopefully not! If your home directory is otherwise intact you are 
probably fine :)

A few things to try:

Check under the main menu and Internet (sorry, from memory - it might be 
under another menu) - is it there?
If not,  have you check the Synaptic package manager for Thunderbird? If 
it saying it's installed try uninstalling (purge if you can) then reinstall.
