I have been looking for some answers since I saw your post because I
have problems seeing XP shares from Ubuntu as well. So for now I
only have some questions and no answers.

First, are both the XP machine and the Ubuntu laptop on the same
subnet?

Have you told the Kaspersky firewall on the XP machine to 'trust' the
local subnet?

If you have got a Kaspersky firewall running, have you disabled the
Windows XP firewall?

When you updated Ubuntu, did you have a message asking you if it
could update your smb.conf file with a new one? (I'm fairly sure the
7.10 > 8.04 upgrade does).

Did you install 8.04 from scratch or did you upgrade from 7.10 (or
even 6.06)?

I did get through to my wife's XP laptop last night after a small change
to the smb.conf, but it may have been a fluke because I could not see
it this morning. I need to do some experiments to prove if the
smb.conf change actual was beneficial.

Enough for now. Let me know how you get on.

Tony
