Looks like

/etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/nvidia-common

is just a couple of calls to nvidia-detector to decide if the obsolete 
drivers should be used or not.

Strangely for me nvidia-detector returns "none" whilst I'm using nvidia 
drivers at the moment on Kubuntu with Nvidia based Leadtek PX7600GT. 
Perhaps a similar failed detection is causing the error?
