I got my (grown up) step daughter to do this (but with an Ubuntu live 
disk) very successfully.  Her problem was that she somehow got into a 
state where she had no permission to the hard disk she had her data 
on.

The only thing I warned her about was to remember to virus check the 
files on the memory stick before puttin them back on a Windows 
machine!
