My feeling is that it is more likely to be the CDs rather than the
drive or S/W.  Are you using good quality 'branded' CDs or so called
'value' ones?  I now tend to go for the cheapest I can find where a
manufacturer has felt able to put his name on them.  I agree it
certainly could be the drive or s/w however.

I have had good experience with Brasero (on Ubuntu).  I don't think
having multiple apps installed that could write to the drive should be
an issue.  I have Brasero along with the standard Ubuntu one, whose
name escapes me at the moment.
